Lindsey was the picker-upper and picked up the whole house. She hated to take care of anything that belonged upstairs.

Things about Grandma B:
1. She has no dishwasher, air conditioning, dryer, computer, DVD or CD player.
2. She is a very good housekeeper. While visiting during the summer, if we'd wake up and go to the bathroom, she would sneak in and make the bed before we'd even have the chance.
3. She is well-known in the family for making raisin cookies, pistachio pudding "salad," and macaroni salad.
4. She is very frugal. She saves and reuses anything she can, including cups from Burger King.
5. Her favorite song is "I Believe in Christ." When I was younger and would practice the piano when she was visiting, she would sit beside the piano and request me to play that song.
6. She remember birthdays and always has a card and money on time to the birthday person.
7. She knows how to can things. Her and Grandpa would always can the veggies Grandpa would grow in his garden.
8. She has a strong relationship with her brothers. I think that has been the biggest reason she's doing ok without Grandpa.
9. She wakes up at the crack of dawn, sets her hair, and does her chores. She has a set schedule to follow. Her hair has to be perfect if she goes anywhere - she'll wear a hairnet to ensure that.
10. She loves Pepsi (caffeine free). She'll have half a can in the morning, and the other half in the afternoon.
11. She always has Creamsicles for us when we visit.
12. She's very organized and knows where everything is.
13. Every Memorial Day, she drives an hour to the cemetary to decorate the graves of loved ones.
Last summer the kids and me were able to visit her. (I think we scared her - we can be very active!)
Grandma playing with Spencer's slime
This is Grandma S who lives in Cedar City, a decent-sized city. Grandpa passed away when Logan was a baby (4 years ago). She is independent and is doing good. Since Grandpa passed away, she has developed a condition where she has a low white blood cell count and can't be around people because they could be sick and it could be life-threatening to her. Before I hung up with her, she told me to be good. She told me she was being good because she has too much to do here.
Things about Grandma S:
1. She loves her dog - Two.
2. She is involved in doing genealogy. She works in the name extraction program, reading old records from old churches or in different languages. She prepares the names for temple work.
3. Her and Grandpa would drive an hour to St. George every Friday to attend the temple. She has a strong testimony of temple work.
4. She also canned food from Grandpa's garden. She still has some of those items, pretty old, scary stuff now.
5. She can't eat sugar. She does eat other weird food combinations, though.
6. She believes in alternative healing methods.
7. She has tons of stories to share, and is an "expert" on a lot of things.
8. She loves singing.
9. She is a good seamstress. She made each of the grandkids quilts when we got married. She has made other things, like slippery, gold blankets and her version of cabbage patch kids.
10. She makes the best carmels.
11. She used to drive a VW bug.
12. She broke her elbow roller skating with the grandkids, a true kid-at-heart.
13. She is a playful Grandma. She would get down on the ground and blow bubbles with my kids and read to them.
I am so blessed to have these great women in my life. I love each one of them and am proud they're my grandmas.

Lindsey, 11 years old
We celebrated Lindsey's birthday on Friday. She is 11 years old now. It's hard to believe; time has gone by so fast. I give the kids the option of choosing their breakfast. On birthdays, they have always chosen breakfast sandwiches (scrambled eggs, ham, and cheese on a hamburger bun). I serve them on a plate I made (with Lindsey while the boys were at a campout one year) that is our special birthday plate.
at dinner, the Olive Garden
We also let the kids choose what we have for dinner. Lindsey chose to go to the Olive Garden. We told our server that it was Lindsey's birthday, so about 5 different employees came out and sang "Buena Festa" to Lindsey and gave her this yummy cake. Lindsey was so silly during it all. She giggled and tried to hide her face.
Mr. Hagen was Lindsey's teacher this year. She did go to the other two teachers (Ms. Brown & Mrs. Allred ) for reading and writing. Mr. Hagen would work very long hours to get everything done. He would be to school by 6:00 in the morning. I would call and ask him if he needed help in the classroom, but he rarely needed my help because of the long hours he (and his wife) put in. Mr. Hagen took care of the kids. He always did special parties for them to celebrate whatever they could. He would also buy snacks and let the kids buy them back from him for a cheap price. He rewarded the kids often with subs from Ned's Krazy Sub. I decided that a gift card from there would be a nice teacher gift for him. When I went to buy it, I mentioned that my daughter's teacher was always buying subs from there for his class. The worker knew him by name and said he knew him well. Mr. Hagen is retiring this year. We hope to see him next year as a sub.
This was the second year Spencer had Mrs. Grove for his teacher. He had her last year in 2nd grade. She moved up to 3rd grade, and kept Spencer in her class. I was able to help out a lot during the year. I got to know Mrs. Grove better and am grateful for that. Mrs. Grove has a son who plays football, so she and Spencer always talked about football. Mrs. Grove has a tremendous love for reading, one that I think has influenced Spencer and his reading skills.
Does Ms. Slocum look old enough to retire? No Way! But she is. Logan has been my only child to have her as a teacher, and I am so glad he did. I feel like Lindsey and Spencer missed out not having her as their teacher (although, Lindsey did have a fantastic teacher - Mrs. Woods). I was able to help out from time to time in Logan's class. I am still in awe of how Ms. Slocum handled all those 5-year olds. Logan has definitely grown and learned tons this year. He can read already.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again - my kids have had the most awesome teachers in school. I am amazed by their abilities, knowledge, and patience. If I think about it (which I try not to) tears come to my eyes because we have been so blessed to have these wonderful teachers. I am forever indebted to them. Thank you Mr. Hagen, Mrs. Grove, and Ms. Slocum. We love you!
Lindsey on stage receiving an award, standing next to the principal
On Wednesday there was an intermediate awards assembly at the kids' school. Eric and I were invited to attend. Lindsey and Spencer were recognized for participating in Student Council. This was Spencer's first year in Student Council and Lindsey's third year.
I bought Eric a shaved ice machine for Christmas. The kids have been begging to sell shaved ice. We set up shop on Monday and sold shaved ice. We made $10.50. Today, we made $1, 50 cents of it was from Eric - only one real customer today! It was way too hot to do this and only make $1. When we were done, the kids didn't help clean up today. So between that and our profits, we won't be selling tomorrow.
Don't these pajamas go with the heat? I never packed up the old box of clothes in Kaylen's closet, so she has once again been digging around in it today. These pajamas were her 4th outfit for today. When I changed her at bedtime, she was sweaty. I have to put up the old clothes, especially those that are not suitable for our weather!

Saturday morning we drove to Fountain Hills. I thought the kids might enjoy seeing the giant fountain, but after a couple of minutes they'd seen enough and were ready to do other things like...
...throw rocks in the water or food at the ducks and birds. During lunch, Logan took his an apple piece that had fallen on the ground and threw it at a duck (Spencer's suggestion). It hit the duck on the butt!
In the afternoon we worked on cleaning up yearbook stuff which had taken over our garage. I had to snap this picture of Eric using a broom. This is pretty rare, so I'm glad I caught it. : )
We're able to fit our cars in the garage again, which is so nice since it was 110 degrees today. The "springy" weather is gone. It's weird for yearbooks to be done, but it is so wonderful. I would wake up early ever morning and work throughout the day on yearbook stuff. It was so weird being able to sleep in until 7:45 today and having "free time" during Kaylen's nap. I would check my e-mail so many times during the day to see if any teachers had e-mailed, that it had become a habit. I found myself checking so many times today, only to find nothing - which is totally fine. The timing is great, now that school will be over this week for the kids.
