Our first stop on the trip (other than potty stops) was in Carthage, Illinois. We visited Carthage Jail, where Joseph and Hyrum Smith were fatally shot. We watched a short video in the visitor's center, and then took a tour of the home/jail. I knew it wouldn't be a "fun" visit, but I wasn't prepared to sit in the room where Joseph and Hyrum were, with tears running down my face, and listen to a re-enactment of that day. It was a powerful moment and one that strengthened my testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith.
